The Kingdom Comes
Matthew 21:3-5
And if anyone says anything to you, you will say, “The Lord has need of them (the donkey colt).” And immediately He sent them. And this happened so that the words through the prophet were fulfilled saying, “You speak to the city of Zion, ‘Lo, your kingdom comes to you, benevolent and having mounted upon an ass and upon a colt, young of a mule.’”
“I did not come to abolish the prophets but to fulfill them.” Those who exposited Divine Truths found in the Old Testament did speak of the One who was to come, the Messiah born of a virgin to become a suffering servant (Isaiah). All that is true. More importantly, however, ‘the kingdom comes to you’ is a kingdom of commands to fulfill the law of Moses, twenty heart-circumcising commands to upgrade the stale ten commandments which no longer kept God’s people holy.
This kingdom would not conquer enemies but value them, offering clemency at every turn, rejoicing in persecution rather then kicking against it. Those looking for retribution would be looking in the wrong place if Jesus is expected to be the source of entitled justification. The only justification associated with Jesus emits from His cross, relieving the weight of sin on mankind. Fumes of forgiveness extend beyond the cross of Christ and onto the raised crosses behind Him (Matthew 16:24).
This heavenly army, equipped with Humility and lots of it, resists the day of evil, sins of carnality. Aching to strike with fangs and claws, the belt of Truth and the breastplate of Righteousness suppresses the flesh and produces the good news of peace and faithfulness. Victory extinguishes the flaming arrows of the dark one (Ephesians 6).
The King, benevolent on a donkey, leads in Humility, and the kingdom coming is a heavenly one. The will of the Father on earth is as He would expect it to be anywhere else – fruitful.
